EmfPrinter - EmfPrinter is a virtual printer driver for Windows 2000 and higher (tested only on Windows XP so far), which allows you to create EMF (Enhanced Meta File) vector images from any Windows application which supports printing.

The nice things about this virtual printer are:

1. it's Open Source: free as in freedom!

2. it exports data directly in a vector format, without rasterizations; for more info about raster vs vector formats, please see the Wikipedia

3. very easy to install and use (and also to uninstall actually!)

Why EMF?

Why export printed data in EMF instead of another vector format, much more widespread like SVG? It's simple: the Windows GDI printing system provides data to the printer drivers directly in EMF format; thus it's "easy" to extract EMFs from printed data using a virtual printer driver.

Failed to install on my XP SP3 PC because the installer couldn't shut down the Print Spooler service. Uninstaller then failed to remove printer driver, so a new install failed, even after I stopped the Print Spooler manually.

Never got this S/W to work properly, unfortunately. Needs some work I think before the S/W is useful.

This program doesn't work properly. Sometimes hangs my computer and sometimes makes special visual effects on my desktop. Doesn't generate any file. I have Windows XP SP3.
Today I've uninstalled it.

This virtual printer doesn't seem to print with much quality. The results are very low resolution.

Quality

I loaded EmfPrinter 0.3.0 as I was having a problem with PrimoEMF, but the quality of the picture was not as good as Primo. I ended up fixing the problem with Primo.

Useful tool - but crashed.

I have always wanted a tool like this. Tool is easy to use and works pretty good. Nevertheless it has crashed twice as I tried to 'print' a multipage document (blue screen in Win XP!).
It's still ok for me, as I primarily need emf's from single page cad -drawings which exist as pdf.

Can`t comment...

Program did not install on my system (XP/SP2). Error codes included "Error Code: 1801 / The printer name is invalid." "Error Code: 126 / The specified module could not be found." "Error Code: 1797 / The printer driver is unknown."

Note also that this review page doesn't allow for "Don't know/can't tell" responses on question #2. Therefore I rated everything "good," the middle option.
